Mother City
Seeking Representation
Nolan and Grace are newlyweds in 1903 when they move to New York City to support their families upstate. But for Grace, who lives in terror of the day she goes from new wife to new mother, money is the least of their problems.
In her efforts to avoid pregnancy, Grace befriends Harlem pharmacist, Roz, and becomes entangled in the woman’s aspirin smuggling ring. While working with Roz, Grace starts to see all the things she could do with her life if she does not become a mother—but she loves Nolan, and what will become of her marriage if she refuses to have children?
Meanwhile, hoping to earn enough money to return to his family, Nolan gets work digging tunnels for the New York subway. But tunnel work is incredibly dangerous, and one by one Nolan’s crew falls victim to accidents. When the call comes to unionize, Nolan must decide whether to keep working to provide for his family, or to join the union and fight alongside his new friends—that is, if he doesn’t die in the tunnels first.
