Mother City
Seeking Representation
Nolan and Grace are newlyweds in 1903 when they relocate to New York City to earn money to support their families’ farms upstate. After moving to the city, Grace begins to fear getting pregnant—how would they afford to support their families? How would they support themselves? In her efforts to avoid pregnancy, Grace befriends Harlem pharmacist, Roz, and becomes entangled in the woman’s aspirin smuggling ring. While working with Roz, Grace starts to wonder, what could she be if she never became a mother at all?
Meanwhile, hoping to earn enough money to return to farm in a few short years, Nolan gets work digging tunnels for the New York subway. But tunnel work turns out to be incredibly dangerous, and one by one members of Nolan’s crew fall victim to accidents. When the call comes to unionize, Nolan must decide whether to keep working to provide for his family, or to join the union and fight alongside his new friends–that is, if he doesn’t die in the tunnels first.
